How To Reverse Hypothyroidism Naturally

When your thyroid shows symptoms of being underactive and sluggish, or hypoactive, as it is called officially, you can improve the function of your thyroid gland in natural ways.

Low levels of thyroid hormones are usually to blame for the deficiency. To solve the issues, there are natural cures and herbal remedies to be used as treatment. I am going to show you the three crucial nutrients that are needed to power you up and reverse hypothyroidism. First, let's see what the symptoms are, then quickly move on.

What are symptoms of a bad thyroid function?

If you have one or more of these symptoms, you may have to assist your thyroid in order to get going again:

  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Sleepiness
  • Feeling cold
  • Dry skin
  • Mental slowdown (concentration)
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Unsatisfying weight loss during a diet

Which hormones does an active thyroid need?

Two hormones are in charge here. One is called T3 (Triiodothyronine), the other T4 (Tetraiodothyronine).

T3 is the inactive hormone. It's used as a reserve depot and is made from two nutrients. As soon as a third ingredient comes into play, the inactive T3 from the depot is used to be transformed into T4, the active hormone.

T3 is made from protein in combination with iodine. Combine foods that have both of these substances, and your body will make T3 (as long as the protein and iodine are not needed for other processes, which can happen if you don't eat enough healthy food). I am going to show you what to eat later.

Having T3 alone is not enough, though. As we have established, T3 is inactive. You may have a lot of T3, but it's useless unless you get T4. To get T4, you need another substance, and that is selenium. Once that is done, we have an active thyroid without any fancy medication needed!

Next up, I will show you which foods you can consume in order to treat an underperforming thyroid. Also note that you should just eat natural amounts of food. You don't kick-start your thyroid from one day to the next. It's a process of healthy, deliberate eating that will improve your health and heal you from hormone-related problems like tiredness and depression.

Also, I am going to show you products you can buy at in case you don't like the foods mentioned here. Which way you go is up to you, but I understand not everyone likes seaweed or brazil nuts.

Which foods to eat or supplements to get

How to increase protein levels:

This is pretty easy. Sources of protein are:
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Plants such as soy beans or lentils
The quality of the protein is also kind of important. It is best to combine different protein sources throughout the day. It is never wrong to eat protein, as long as you drink a lot of water in case you really increase your protein intake.

There is another aspect about the quality of protein: While it helps to combine different protein sources, this also goes especially for animal and plant proteins. These two sources have different amino acids (sort of like the DNA of proteins) that, combined, are more effective than each single source.

For people who are vegetarian, and for people who want to get a high-quality protein without having to switch foods so often, I recommend that you buy a protein powder. Protein powders contain very good protein that has a much higher biological value than individual foods.

How to increase iodine levels:

Iodine is found in many foods, but only some foods contain it in amounts worth mentioning. These include:
  • Seaweed
  • Fish
  • Seafood
  • Iodized salt
One thin slice of seaweed (you can buy seaweed in Asian markets) is enough for our purpose. Make sure not to eat too much seaweed, as it contain extremely high amounts of iodine. If you don't like the foods mentioned here, you can also buy a vegetarian capsule supplement at Amazon:

I chose this supplement because it also contains selenium, which is next on our list.

How to increase selenium levels:

Selenium is a mineral found in many foods. Here are some of the sources rich in selenium:
  • Brazil nuts
  • Coconut
  • Seafood
  • Fish
  • Liver
Alternatively, you can a 6 months supply for only 5 dollars at Amazon:

Healthy Origins Selenium Seleno Excel Multi Vitamins, 200 Mcg, 180 Count

The dose of 200 mcg is also higher than what you'd usually get from foods. Considering that protein and iodine are easy to come by and that you might have a lot of inactive T3, it's worth giving a selenium supplement a shot since it will help release a lot of T4 from stored T3.

Final words

Treating a slow thyroid is relatively easy once you know how it works. It is also a great way of speeding up your diet, as some dietary problems arise from a lazy thyroid gland.

All you need is protein, iodine and selenium. You get moderate amounts of all of them in fish and seafoods (try sushi!), and optimal amounts in the supplements mentioned. Go with what you feel is best for you, or even combine supplements and foods.

Please remember to use both of them responsibly. Also, it is recommended that you seek medical advice if you have problems with your thyroid.
